Jill Dando murder documentary announced by Netflix

Netflix has announced that its latest true crime documentary will look at Jill Dando's infamous murder.

The streaming service has built a reputation for fascinating crime series and films, and is now due to turn the spotlight on the life and shocking death of TV presenter Dando.

An announcement from Netflix reads: "On the morning of 26th April 1999, Jill Dando was killed outside her home in West London. Her murder became one of the most high profile and complex investigations in British history.

"The multi-part series will blend archive, new research and revelatory interviews, to revisit Dando’s life, career, legacy and what would become one of the most notorious unsolved murders of the 20th century."

It is set to stream as a series and will drop later in 2023.

Dando was a BBC journalist and TV presenter best known for her work on Breakfast News, the BBC One O'Clock News, the Six O'Clock News, and presenting Holiday and Crimewatch.

She was 37 when she was shot dead on the doorstep of her Fulham home during broad daylight, prompting a huge murder inquiry by the Met and the UK's biggest criminal investigation since the Yorkshire Ripper.

Although local man Barry George was originally convicted of her murder, he was eventually acquitted after eight years in prison.

The finger was pointed at Serbian mobster and politician Arkan in 2012, but as he had died in 2000 it could not be proved that he was the killer.

No one else has ever been charged with Dando's murder and the case still remains unsolved.

Netflix's other hit true crime documentaries have included Tiger King, The Tinder Swindler, The Staircase and Making A Murderer.

The streaming service has recently announced plans to crack down on password sharing this year, which has already been trialled in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.

Although Netflix's terms of service state that password sharing outside of households is not permitted, the company estimates that 100 million people streaming their content are doing so with borrowed accounts and the new plans will include offering users the chance to pay a small fee to transfer profile information to a new or sub account.
