John Cena Shares When Shark Week Will Return for 2024: 'I've Been Waiting for This All Year'

John Cena is ready to ride the Shark Week wave.

The WWE wrestler will host Shark Week 2024. The news is included in a fresh promo video for the beloved summer TV event. PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the clip, which shares Shark Week's return date.

In the video, Cena approaches a July whiteboard calendar and excitedly notices a blue shark doodle drawn on July 7. The realization sends him to a dock filled with smiling beachgoers—including a friendly sea lion—who eagerly exchange high fives and grins with the Peacemaker actor.

Once Cena reaches the end of the dock, he looks at the camera and says, "I've been waiting for this all year," before signaling the big announcement: Shark Week 2024 will start July 7 on Discovery with John Cena as host.

"Now, this is a holiday!" Cena says at the end of the video as sharks soar above him.

Shark Week, a week-long TV event for over 35 years, is known for giving viewers thrilling, up-close experiences with sharks and the people who study the animals and fight to protect them. This year, is no different.

Shark Week 2024 will include Belly of the Beast Pt. 2, the next chapter in Shark Week's fascinating, real-life look at a great white shark feeding frenzy. Other highlights shark lovers can expect this summer are, Monster Hammerhead: Species X, a special about potential new hammerhead species, and Great White Serial Killer: Sea of Blood, a show which a village dealing with a persistent great white shark.

Cena has some experience with the sea. The Ricky Stanicky star made a cameo as a merman in Barbie. Cena follows several other starry Shark Week hosts. Jason Mamoa led Shark Week last year, and Dwayne Johnson hosted Shark Week 2022.
