Aston Villa captain John McGinn has issued a message ahead of the club’s Europa Conference League quarter-final tie against Lille.

McGinn is aiming to become the first Villa skipper to win major silverware since Andy Townsend in 1996. The Scottish midfielder has been influential during Villa’s Europa Conference League campaign, scoring a later winner against Zrinjski Mostar at Villa Park and registering four goal contributions across eight appearances in the competition.

The 29-year-old is enjoying his best season in a Villa shirt and has the opportunity to help guide the club to their first European semi-final since 1982. Ahead of the first leg against Lille tonight, McGinn posted a message to supporters on social media.

McGinn was restored to the starting XI against Brentford last weekend after serving a three-match suspension and has hinted that he will keep his place against Lille. Posting on Instagram, the captain wrote: “Good to be back after a few weeks on the naughty step. See you tomorrow. UTV.”

His return was a welcome relief for Unai Emery’s side, who have been forced to cope without Boubacar Kamara’s defensive presence in midfield. However, McGinn is still at risk of receiving another suspension in the Europa Conference League.

The Villa skipper joins Moussa Diaby and Matty Cash in being one yellow card away from missing either the return leg against Lille or the first leg of a possible semi-final. All yellow cards will be wiped at the start of the sem-finals, should Villa reach that stage.

Lille sit fourth in Ligue 1 and will likely present a tough test for Villa. The winner of the two-leeded quarter-final will face either Olympiacos or Fenerbahce in the next found.
