Jonathan Groff burst into tears while peeing in a public bathroom because of his Tony nomination

"What's wrong with that weird man crying at the urinal?"

Jonathan Groff is so overjoyed about the seven Tony nominations his Broadway show Merrily We Roll Along snagged his week that it’s literally pouring out of him.

The actor, whose turn as Franklin Shepherd earned him a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, has revealed that he cried his way through his press day on Thursday — including in one unexpected spot.

“I cried so much during these interviews today, and then I went into the bathroom at the junket and I was peeing... and I started crying again,” Groff said on Late Night With Seth Meyers that evening. “Just to myself. I think there’s something about the release of urination. I was just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna cry again.’”

It was at that moment, of course, that a reporter entered the bathroom. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, now there’s someone else here and they’re hearing me cry,’” Groff recalled. “I was washing my hands and he was like, ‘Are you okay?’”

Host Seth Meyers defended the writer’s decision to check on the actor, jokingly adding, “If I saw someone crying in a urinal, I wouldn’t think, ‘Oh, they’re probably real happy. They probably got nominated for an award today.’”

A laughing Groff agreed. “That’s so true,” he said. “You’d be like, ‘What’s wrong with that weird man crying at the urinal?’”

Merrily We Roll Along received seven nominations on Tuesday, three of which were acting nods for the musical’s star trio of Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. The Stephen Sondheim–composed cult classic is also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Direction of a Musical.

Groff reflected on the show's big achievement while speaking with Meyers. “My costars Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe got nominated for Tonys!” he cheered. “Our amazing director, Maria [Friedman], who’s been working on this production for over 12 years, got a nomination. It’s so incredible.”
