Jonnie Irwin's wife Jess shares 'heartbreaking' question asked by son, 3, after his death
Jonnie Irwin's wife Jess has revealed he is 'still present' as she shed light on her daily conversations with their three boys. She said the children - who weren't aware of the Channel 4 star's terminal cancer diagnosis - regularly spoke about him.
The A Place in the Sun host was given just six months to live in 2020, but fought bravely against the disease. He sadly died in February this year, aged 50.
Jess, who married Jonnie in 2016, told Hello! magazine how their sons, five-year-old Rex and three-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac, had been coping since their father's death. He said it had "all been quite positive".
She said the youngest two often say: "I want Daddy to come back," while the eldest "wants to include him" in things and will often ask her questions such as: "Would Daddy like to watch this?" or "Was this Daddy's favourite chocolate?"
The mum-of-three told the publication: "The other day Cormac asked: 'Can the spaceman not find him?' That broke my heart." She also shared a touching interaction with Rex, the Express reports, revealing that during a recent trip away, he'd pointed to the screws on his wrap-around sunglasses and said: '"Mummy, look – if you press this button, you can see up in the sky. And if you press this button, you can speak to Daddy."
During the interview - her first since Jonnie's death - Jess reflected on her husband's final days, saying it made her "really, really, really sad" thinking about what must have been going through his mind. She said Jonnie had told her he was "so happy" to have spent his life with her and said he knew their kids would experience "the most joy and fun" in their lives.
