Jonny Howson can't say for certain that he will be a Middlesbrough player next season but is hoping that he and the club can come to an agreement on a new contract after the end of the campaign.

Howson, 35, is out of contract at the end of the season but has made clear his desire to stay at the club for an eighth season next term. And Teesside Live understand that the club want to keep Howson too, with a growing expectation that he will still be a Boro player next season.

However, while both parties seem keen to negotiate another 12-month contract extension for the skipper, the two parties will still have to come to an agreement on the right terms of a deal for that to come to fruition. Appearing on the Twe12th Man Podcast on Monday evening, it was put to Howson that chairman Steve Gibson had told supporters last week that he hopes Howson stays next season, as he was asked if there was any update he could share.

Howson said: "Until anything gets sorted it is hard to say anything. In football, anything can happen. So until anything is sorted, I don't think it would be right for me to comment either way. I would love to stay and it's great to hear that the club want me to stay.

"Hopefully we can get it sorted. I'd like to think it will do and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't. But until it actually gets sorted, I can't be certain. But it's been like that for the past couple of years now, so hopefully we have the same outcome."

Howson has previously made clear his desire to stay for what will be an eighth season at the club. Still such an important player, he has largely avoided the injuries that many of his team-mates have suffered this term and has played 42 games this season. With one more to come against Watford on Saturday before attentions turn to next season fully, it's likely a new deal will be finalised in the aftermath.

Howson made a guest appearance on the Twe12th Man Podcast this week where, along with the contract discussion, he also went in-depth in discussing his seven years at Boro to date and in reflecting on this current season and working with head coach Michael Carrick.
