Grimsby Town have confirmed their second summer signing with the arrival of goalkeeper Jordan Wright from Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old stopper has signed a two-year deal at Blundell Park, hoping to take the starting spot between the sticks, having spent two years as a back-up at the Imps after joining them from Nottingham Forest.

Wright had various loans in non-league to build experience while coming through the Forest academy before signing permanently for Lincoln in 2022, going on to make 31 appearances for the Mariners’ local rivals with ten clean sheets.

It was a top priority for Town to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with head coach David Artell feeling that the club have improved in this area with the acquisition of Wright.

Artell told the club’s website: “He’s an excellent shot-stopper and a commanding presence. He’s got good experience at a level, and now he needs to play regularly over an extended period of time, so he’s now got a different challenge ahead of him.

“Obviously, he’s got Jake [Eastwood] to compete with and we’re looking forward to working with him. He’s an excellent keeper and I think he will be a terrific acquisition for us.”

The short-distance move for Wright is a great opportunity for him personally to take on a regular starting role, something he has not been able to do yet as a professional. Eastwood remains contracted to the club for next season and will be his competition for the gloves moving forward.

Grimsby’s goalkeeping coach, Steve Croudson, worked with Wright previously at Lincoln, so has had a say in this move happening, with direct conversations taking place between the pair before the deal was completed.

Town’s new recruit added: “I’m delighted to get it done now and get the season going. I knew Steve [Croudson] from before, we had a few conversations and then it moved from there. I now can’t wait to get going and let’s hope for a big season!”

With the transfer window now officially open, the Mariners’ transfer activity is expected to ramp up in the next few weeks before pre-season starts at the end of June, and Wright will be in from day one of testing to try and claim the number one spot for next term.
