Joseph Gordon-Levitt Serenades Wife with Taylor Swift's 'Lover' for Her Birthday: 'She Really Loves' Her

Joseph Gordon-Levitt marked his wife Tasha McCauley's birthday in a special way.

Gordon-Levitt, 43, took a moment at the end of his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 19 to give her a "special birthday present": his rendition of Taylor Swift's 2019 hit "Lover."

After the actor and Fallon, 49, discussed Gordon-Levitt's role in Netflix's new Beverly Hills Cop movie alongside Eddie Murphy and Gordon-Levitt's past musical performances on Fallon's late night talk show, the host teed Gordon-Levitt up for an acoustic rendition of one of Swift's love songs.

"Before we go, I know today is an important day and there's somebody you want to shoutout," Fallon said.

"Today is actually my wife's birthday, and I'm so sad because she's not here in New York with me," Gordon-Levitt explained to The Tonight Show's audience. "I'm here working and she's back home and I feel so terrible. So I texted Jimmy and I [asked] 'can I give her a special birthday present on the show?' "

"And we're here to make dreams come true," Fallon quipped, as he handed Gordon-Levitt a guitar and a microphone.

"This is a song by a singer-songwriter that she really loves. You all might know [it]," he said. "I just want to say, babe — you're the most luminous soul I've ever met and I'm so grateful you were born. I'm coming home soon. Love you."

Gordon-Levitt then played the first verse and chorus of "Lover," one of Swift's signature love songs, accompanied by members of Fallon's house band The Roots, in celebration of his wife McCauley's birthday.

Gordon-Levitt and McCauley, a tech industry entrepreneur who is a former board member of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI, married in December 2014. The pair share two sons, whom they welcomed in August 2015 and June 2017. They have never shared the names of their children publicly and typically keep details of their personal lives private.

“My son … he hasn’t made the choice to be in the public eye, and that’s a choice that I would like him to be able to make when he’s older, when he can think about these kinds of things and make that decision for himself,” Gordon-Levitt said during a 2015 interview on on Live! With Kelly and Michael, some time after he and McCauley welcomed their older son. “So, for now, I’m just a protective dad, and I want to protect his privacy."

Gordon-Levitt's next movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, begins streaming on Netflix July 3.
