Julianne Moore says saying women are 'ageing gracefully' is 'totally sexist'

Julianne Moore has said saying that women are "ageing gracefully" is "totally sexist".

The phrase is often used to describe women as they get older, and has been used in countless articles about female celebrities.

But according to reports, Moore told As If magazine that people need to accept that ageing is something everybody goes through and that it "just is".

"There's so much judgement inherent in the term 'ageing gracefully'," said the 60-year-old star.

"Is there an ungraceful way to age? We don't have an option of course. No one has an option about ageing, so it's not a positive or a negative thing, it just is."

"It's part of the human condition, so why are we always talking about it as if it is something that we have control over?" the actor added.

Moore turned 60 in December and has previously revealed she is embracing her age.

"It seems so silly to talk about it as something negative when it is a privilege to continue to age," she told The Sunday Times earlier this year.

However, the mother-of-two did share some of the secrets behind her glow.

"My mother has a lot to do with it because she wouldn’t let us go in the sun," the redhead said. "She couldn’t be in the sun and I look just like her. I wear sunscreen on my face every day and a hat too.”

She also credited facial treatments and a diet that's heavy on fish and vegetables but added: "I’m not that good, I like wine. I try to stick to things that make me happy."
