'It’s just all wishy-washy half-baked promises of things that you know they can’t fix'

It appears that apathy is spreading in the town of Rochdale. With only one week to spare before the general election, it seems many people in the borough have had enough.

One lady, 61-year-old Sarah expressed her feelings when she described Rishi Sunak as ‘ineffective’ and Keir Starmer as ‘even worse’.

She said: “None of them seem to be dynamic enough to do anything, they don’t come across as convincing. It’s just all wishy-washy half-baked promises of things that you know they can’t fix.”

Twenty-year-old student Tom prefers the Labour leader to Mr Sunak, but confessed that he’s still not Starmer’s ‘biggest fan’.

He explained: “I’ve never really bothered politically, I just want someone who’s going to lead the country who I feel like I can trust, and I don’t feel like I can trust the current prime minister or political party that we’ve got at the minute.”

Joyce, 75, expressed sympathy for people like Tom, as she believes that young people are often overlooked, especially regarding the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

When asked about her main issues, she said: “I’m not too bad actually, it’s the younger people that I feel sorry for because everything’s so expensive.

“I mean I’m retired now but you think how on earth do they do it? You know it’s difficult enough for us, you know [it’s] a lot worse for younger people, I think it’s them that need more targeting and looking after as well.”

These interviews are part of a nationwide vox pop project led by Reach, dubbed ‘5000 voices’.

Reporters from the MEN are travelling all around Greater Manchester to hear from the people about the issues that are affecting them on the run up to the general election next week.
