Justin Timberlake announces his first album in almost 6 years after teasing new single 'Selfish'
Justin Timberlake has announced his first album in almost six years.
After performing a concert for fans on Friday, he revealed the upcoming album on Instagram.
"Everything I Thought It Was" doesn't have a release date, but you can hear a snippet of its first single.
Justin Timberlake is gearing up to release his first album in almost six years.
After wiping his Instagram clean of previous posts — a move becoming popular among artists — earlier this week, Timberlake shared an image announcing a "one night only" hometown show at Memphis' Orpheum Theater, where he debuted a new track titled "Selfish."
Footage from inside the concert captured by fans and posted on X, formerly Twitter, shows the former NSYNC star performing the song.
Timberlake also shared a snippet of the studio version of "Selfish" on his TikTok account.
Following the concert, Timberlake wrote on Instagram that his sixth solo album will be titled "Everything I Thought It Was."
A short clip announcing the album included a voiceover by actor Benicio Del Toro.
Billboard reported that some fans on Reddit had guessed that either an album or a single would be titled "Everything I Thought It Was" after finding a trademark application filed by an LLC last year for the phrase.
"Everything I Thought It Was…A Sonic Film" has also been trademarked by the same company, possibly suggesting that a film could accompany the upcoming album.
In the run-up to the album announcement, Timberlake had shared a cryptic carousel of images of what appeared to be a music video set with the caption "EITIW," which led to fans deciphering the acronym and finding the trademark filing.
That post also featured a photograph of a missing person flyer that appears to reference the "SexyBack" singer.
"HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?" it reads. "Age: Infinity; Height: Feels like 10′ tall; Weight: Up; Eyes: Precision; Hair: Depends."
Timberlake is scheduled to appear on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on January 25, per Billboard, which may allow him to officially announce the album.
He has also been booked to appear as a musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" on January 27, where he could perform "Selfish" for a bigger audience.
Timberlake's last album, "Man of the Woods," was released in February 2018.
The singer has appeared in several collaborations since, the most recent being "Keep Going Up" with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado, which was released in September 2023.
