Karen Gillan has offered advice to upcoming Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson who is currently filming her first season of the show.

Former Coronation Street actor Gibson has been cast as Ruby Tuesday for the long-running sci-fi show's 14th season alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th incarnation of the Doctor.

Talking to the Radio Times, Gillan was asked if she had any advice for Gibson about starring in the show.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star said: "I think just enjoy it. Your life's about to turn upside down, but it's... you know, just make sure that you keep all of your people around you and your support system and just enjoy it."

She added: "It is the most exciting thing to go on adventures with the Doctor in the TARDIS. It's like the best thing ever!"

Gillan was also asked whether she would return to the show for its 60th anniversary later this year: "It's cool to see that people are still intrigued by Amy Pond and whether she could return. Maybe, maybe not – I don't know!"

Gillan, who played companion Amy Pond between 2010 and 2013, remains one of the show's most popular characters.

During her time on the show, she was exclusively the companion of the Eleventh Doctor played by Matt Smith. They would also often be joined by Pond's boyfriend and later husband Rory, played by Arthur Darvill.

Since leaving Doctor Who a decade ago, Gillan has gone on to star in several Marvel movies as Nebula, appeared as Ruby Roundhouse in both Jumanji movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black and led the cast of Gunpowder Milkshake, an action film that also starred Michelle Yeoh, Lena Headey and Paul Giamatti.
