Kate Garraway shares dismay at not being able to vote as Derek Draper gets polling card

Kate Garraway has revealed the 'only' polling card posted through her door has been for her late husband Derek Draper.

The Good Morning Britain star has opened up on her dismay at how neither her nor their daughter Darcey, who is 18, will be able to cast their votes today (July 4) at the General Election. Speaking on today's show, the 57-year-old explained that the only polling card posted through her door was for Derek who died on January 3.

The former political advisor, from Chorley, had spent more than a year in hospital and continued to battle the severe effects Covid had on his body after contracting it at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The 56-year-old then fell seriously ill before Christmas 2023 after suffering a cardiac arrest and died several weeks later.

Speaking during a segment with election specialist Alex Thomas about how people can vote, Kate questioned: "What happens if you haven't registered to vote?" before sharing her personal dilemma:

She told viewers on the ITV news programme: "I'm in a situation, I was very excited about it, I thought my daughter and I, who has turned 18 recently, could go and vote for the first time. She's now saying she doesn't think she did properly register.

"Polling cards have come through the door, I haven't had one for myself or her. The only polling card that's come through the door is for Derek, sadly, who's passed away.

"Is there any way around that situation because there are many people saying 'I haven't received a card' or 'I have received a card I think but I can't remember and I don't know if I've lost it'. What do yo do about registration at this late stage?"

Unfortunately, Alex had to inform Kate and GMB viewers that it was too late to register for the upcoming vote. Earlier on the show, as the nation prepared for polling stations to open at 7am this Thursday, Kate and Adil declared their show a "politics-free zone" in accordance with broadcasting rules.

Kate explained: "You might be wondering why on the day of the election - because it is polling day today, by the way - we're not actually discussing the issues related to the general election or interviewing the people that have a position on the issues."

She added: "We can't talk about the issues because we have to follow certain broadcasting rules which means today's Good Morning Britain is a 'politics-free zone.'"
