Kate Hudson Has Saved Red Carpet Looks for Daughter Rani, 5: 'I Have a Very Extensive Archive' (Exclusive)
"One day I'm sure I'll start to see things go missing," the mother of three tells PEOPLE
Kate Hudson knows the importance of a good hand-me-down.
The actress, 44, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation that she has plenty of outfits she has worn to prestigious events over the years that she one day plans to let 5-year-old daughter Rani Rose utilize.
"I have a very extensive archive at this point," Hudson says. "Not all of them I've gotten to keep over the years, but the ones that I [can], and the ones that are custom and all that, I hold onto them."
"[Rani] is already going through my shoes, and I catch her kind of opening my closet doors and looking in, peering into certain things, and I'm like, 'Oh, it just already belongs to Rani,' " the mom of three adds with a laugh. "So one day I'm sure I'll start to see things go missing."

Hudson shares her daughter with fiancé Danny Fujikawa. She is also mom to sons Bingham "Bing" Hawn, 12, with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy and Ryder, 20, with ex-husband Chris Robinson.
When asked if she still pulls clothing options from her famous mother Goldie Hawn's own closet, Hudson explains, "No, not anymore. Maybe when I was younger, and I was living at home many years ago, I would dip into my mom's closet."
Reflecting on her own outfits she has worn to past events — including movie premieres and awards shows — Hudson says they all have a story tied to them.
"They're also moments in your life, depending on what projects you're working on or what you're promoting, that are really a piece of my personal history," she says. "So holding onto them is sort of a retrospective of the art that I've created throughout the years, and is really interesting to look back on."
Hudson — who recently partnered with the shopping platform Rakuten — also notes that the characters she has played onscreen in movies and television shows have each had their own unique sense of fashion.
"I've gotten very lucky between How to Lose a Guy and Almost Famous, and even Liv for Bride Wars," she tells PEOPLE. "I've been very, very lucky with costume."
