Kate Middleton’s New Portrait Draws Controversy Over True Likeness to the Princess of Wales

Tatler unveiled a new portrait of Kate Middleton on Wednesday for the magazine’s July issue. Created by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor, the painting drew criticism online regarding the portrait’s likeness to the Princess of Wales.

The portrait is based on photos of the Princess of Wales from King Charles III’s first state banquet held at Buckingham Palace in November 2022. For the occasion, Kate wore a Jenny Peckham gown and pieces of jewelry that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Diana. The Princess of Wales did not sit for the portrait commissioned by Tatler.

Artist Hannah Uzor said in a companion video released on Tatler’s official X account, formerly known as Twitter, that it is important “to capture the soul of the person” she is painting. The artist combed through photos and videos of the Princess of Wales to “get a sense of who [The Princess of Wales] is.” Uzor drew a sketch of the British royal family member before moving forward with the painting itself.

Despite trying to “capture [The Princess of Wales’] expression,” several found the likeness wanting. “Sorry, as much as I love that you have the Princes of Wales on the cover, that looks nothing like her,” said one user on X. “This portrait looks nothing like the Princess of Wales,” another user said.

This recent portrait controversy comes after King Charles III’s new portrait was unveiled by artist Jonathan Yeo on May 14. The monarch’s first official portrait since he ascended the throne last May also received criticism for its bold red palette. Some referred to the obtrusive red color as a “blood bath.” Another user said, “I’m sorry, but his portrait looks like he’s in hell.”

The Princess of Wales last public appearance was with the British royal family for Christmas services last December. Since that time, Kate has been focusing on her health after she publicly disclosed her cancer diagnosis last March.
