Kathryn Newton Reveals the 'Good Advice' Reese Witherspoon Gave Her on “Big Little Lies ”Set (Exclusive)
The pair played mother and daughter on the HBO series
Kathryn Newton is reflecting on some "good advice" she got from her onscreen mom Reese Witherspoon!
Speaking with PEOPLE at City Year Los Angeles' 13th Annual Spring Break event on Saturday, May 4, the 27-year-old Abigail star opened up about a helpful tip that Witherspoon, 48, once gave her on set.
The pair previously worked together on HBO's hit limited series Big Little Lies from 2017 to 2019, when Newton played Abigail Carlson (the daughter of Witherspoon's Madeline Mackenzie).
"She said 'Always say hi first.' You know when you see somebody at a party that you maybe went to high school with, just go say hi," Newton recalled of Witherspoon's words of wisdom. "You break the ice."
Newton added that she's been "very lucky" in terms of the castmates she's worked with throughout her career so far. "Everyone I've worked with has left a positive mark and makes me want to do that in the future," she said. "Just lead by example."
During her time with PEOPLE, Newton was also asked about a potential third season for Big Little Lies. "My lips are sealed," the star said.
Her comment came after Nicole Kidman seemingly confirmed a follow-up installment to the limited series in a clip shared by DeuxMoi in November, when she reflected on the success of the show, which scored 8 Emmys during its two-season run.
“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children, and I was thinking I was going to retire, and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show,” Kidman said in the clip. “And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.”
“And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI,” the star then added.
The show's main cast members — including Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz — have each expressed interest in reprising their roles, as Woodley also told Harper's Bazaar in December 2023 that the "children [on the show] are not children anymore."
“What is exciting about the possibility of a third season," she said. "What does life look like for those people who are not children anymore?"

Since Big Little Lies, Newton has gone on to appear in films such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Lisa Frankenstein, and Abigail — the latter of which also featured the likes of Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand and the late Angus Cloud.
"It's so funny because we had Abigail come out and then Dan Stevens had Godzilla come out and then Kevin Durand had Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes come out. And I had Lisa Frankenstein just before that. So we've all been going to each other's premieres, and now we just need another premiere to go to so we can keep this train going," she joked with PEOPLE over the weekend. "I just want to keep going to movie premieres of my castmates."
