Kathy Griffin Shares First Listen of Her Voice One Week After Undergoing Vocal Cord Surgery

"I’m grateful to have this much voice," the comedian said during her post-op appointment

Kathy Griffin shares a new exciting update after undergoing vocal cord surgery.

On Tuesday, June 18, the 63-year-old comedian shared a new update regarding her recent vocal cord surgery with a video on TikTok.

Throughout the video, Griffin is seen during her post-op examination as the doctor uses a camera to probe her vocal cords after her June 12 operation. As the examination continued, Griffin was given the go-ahead to speak for the first time following the procedure.

“When you’re ready, give it to me,” the doctor tells Griffin.

She then makes a nondescript noise before the doctor replies, “Beautiful! Anything you want to say?”

“Hello, how are you doing? This is as loud as I can speak right now, but I’m grateful to have this much voice,” Griffin says as the doctor requests she speak louder.

“Hello, everybody! I have this much voice now. I’m getting better,” she exclaims to the best of her ability.

“Still a little raspy, but that will get better with time,” adds the doctor. She then walks Griffin through her surgery checkup and reports back that she’s healing nicely, and notes that there will be “ups and downs.” But the Emmy winner is overjoyed to see the current progress.

The comic then adds, “That is like porn for me. To see that working after it wasn’t working for years, and now it's finally like working.”

"It’s been 1 week since my surgery and to say the least, I’m very happy. I’m following all of the doctor’s orders and staying quiet (even tho I’m a chatty Kathy). Now it’s time to recover for my fall shows ❤️," Griffin captioned the TikTok.

On Wednesday, June 12, she shared a photo on Instagram showing the gauze bandage on her throat covering where the surgery was done.

"Vocal cord surgery went well. 🙏 As you can see some scarring and swelling. It will be worth it if I get some of my voice back.🙏🙏🙏," Griffin captioned the post.

The day before her surgery, she explained what her upcoming surgery would entail in a video on Instagram. "I'm getting an implant in my left vocal cord, which was left permanently paralyzed during my lung cancer surgery, where they took out half my left lung," the actress explained.

"I also have an aperture, which is a tear above my vocal cords and that's why sometimes when I'm doing stand-up my voice goes to a higher pitch," she continued.

"So, anyway, I'm never nervous before surgery and I've had quite a few. But I am a little nervous about this one 'cause it's my voice and I've already gone through it once with the voice problem," Griffin added.

Griffin previously underwent an operation on her left vocal cord in May 2023. In a conversation with PEOPLE in June 2023, she revealed the procedure on her vocal cord — which was damaged nearly two years earlier when she was treated for lung cancer — “was really gnarly."
