A young Katy Perry fan got the surprise of a lifetime when her mother woke her up for a day’s homeschooling with a new substitute teacher, unveiling the Firework singer via a live video call.

Eight-year-old Charlotte was treated to the unexpected call by her mum working with Radio 1’s Greg James on his breakfast show on Tuesday.

A visibly tired Charlotte was woken by her mum telling her she needed to get up for homeschool as the new substitute teacher was waiting on a video call.

Perry then appears on screen and we see Charlotte’s sleepy face turn to one of complete surprise as she realises it’s her hero.

What follows is an adorable exchange between the pair, which includes a show-and-tell with Perry’s pooch Nugget and a discussion about their favourite songs.

Addressing her shocked fan, Perry said: “Hello, good morning. I am your substitute teacher.

“Today’s lessons will just include jokes, music, talking about your favourite foods, all your favourite puppy names - I can show you my puppy, it can be a show-and-tell.”

Perry then gets her dog Nugget who Charlotte recognises from one of her music videos, prompting the singer to brand the youngster “a real fan”.

Asked how she is, Charlotte responded: “It’s crazy to see you because you’ve always been my favourite pop star.”

She then asks Perry what her favourite song is.

The 35-year-old responded: “Probably my favourite song of my own is Firework because people that are your age, eight-years-old and then people that are 80-years-old – it seems a lot of people love that song doesn’t matter what age you are if your male or female or they or them or anything.

“People respond to that song and they all want to dance to it.”

Asked what she was most looking forward about lockdown being over, Charlotte said she couldn’t wait to have a sleepover with friends.

Perry then made a personalised invite for the sleepover for Charlotte to give to pals when lockdown ends.

She said: “Hi this is Katy Perry and Charlotte and OMG quarantine is over!

“Guess what that means, it means Charlotte wants to invite you to have the world’s best slumber party slash rave slash danceathon with pizza and we’re going to dance until we can dance no more - will you be there?”
