If England wins Euro 2024, fans could enjoy a Bank Holiday on Monday, should Prime Minister Keir Starmer get his way. As the Three Lions prepare to face Spain in Sunday evening's final in Berlin following Ollie Watkins' last-gasp semi-final goal versus the Netherlands, calls for a national day off are resurfacing.

The possibility of marking their end to a 58-year major trophy drought with a public holiday has gained support from Sir Keir. Previously expressing support for a celebratory day off, he tweeted last year while anticipating the Lionesses' World Cup final: "It's almost 60 years since England won the World Cup. I'm never complacent about anything...but there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home."

Speaking to The Mirror, Starmer reiterated his position, stating, "If they win it will be a truly historic achievement, one that should be marked with a proper day of celebration." Despite Starmer's enthusiasm, the Conservative government at that time was not convinced, as a spokesman said at the time: "We congratulate the Lionesses on their fantastic achievement in getting to the Women's World Cup final. The current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and there are no plans to change this."

Following the Lionesses' frustrating 1-0 loss in the final, Gareth Southgate's squad is surely keen to avoid a similar fate. After England's recent victory against the Netherlands, Sir Keir took to Twitter expressing his excitement with the post: "What a game @England and what a winner. Berlin here we come! ".

Furthermore, during a meeting with US President Joe Biden, he supported an English triumph. Upon hearing of their progress, Biden joked it was "all because of the Prime Minister". Starmer quipped back saying: "Not lost a game under a labour government."

When questioned by reporters if football was coming home, he responded with confidence: "It looks like it." Sir Keir also backed calls for a bank holiday ahead of England's Euro 2020 final appearance in 2021, reports the Mirror.

He told The Mirror in 2021: "The whole country is incredibly proud of what Gareth Southgate and our England heroes have achieved already.

"History has been made. If we win on Sunday, the country should get the chance to celebrate it properly with an extra bank holiday, granted in the name of the England team."

Sir Keir may well move forward with a plan for an additional bank holiday as Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey voiced on Thursday, asserting that should the Three Lions win on foreign soil for the first time, a celebratory bank holiday ought to be declared.

He said: "The Three Lions are playing their first ever final on foreign soil, and if they bring it home, the government should bring home a bank holiday to celebrate. England deserves the chance to celebrate a once in a generation event. Who knows we might even get decent weather."

To cap off the fervour for a new Bank Holiday as support surges, King Charles made a jestful plea to the national team - to cut down on the nail-biting matches. His statement said: "My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday's match.

"If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation's collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated! Good luck, England."
