Keke Palmer Gave Darius Jackson ‘a Lot of Chances’ Before Restraining Order Filing: Source (Exclusive)
The actress was granted a temporary restraining order against Jackson this week, along with temporary sole physical and legal custody of their son
Keke Palmer, who was recently granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, gave him "a lot of chances" in the past, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Earlier this week, the actress, 30, was also awarded temporary sole physical and legal custody of 8-month-old Leodis, the son she shares with Jackson, 29, after filing a request for a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson and requesting custody of their child.
Now, a source tells PEOPLE that Palmer "did what she had to do," despite having worked "hard to have an amicable split."
"She gave him a lot of chances to do the right thing," they add. "Keke tried so hard to have an amicable split and arrangement [custody]."
"She needed to prioritize her safety and the safety of her baby," the source continues. "She wants the best for Leo. She did not want it to get to this point. But she did what she had to do."
In documents reviewed by PEOPLE, Palmer filed a request for full physical and legal custody of Leodis to a Los Angeles court on Thursday, detailing multiple allegations of physical abuse. She also filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson.
Palmer alleged in Thursday's California Superior Court filing, which had a declaration attached, that on Nov. 5, “Darius trespassed into my home without my knowledge or consent, threatened me, then physically attacked me — lunging for my neck, striking me, throwing me over the couch, and stealing my phone when I told him I was going to call the police.”
The filing included screenshots of what appeared to be security footage of a male striking a female over a sofa. Palmer also alleged that Jackson abused her multiple times over a two-year period.
The filing alleged that there were “many instances of physical violence, including striking and grabbing me around the neck, descriptions of Darius destroying my personal property, including diaries and prescription eyeglasses, throwing my belongings into the street, throwing my car keys to prevent me from driving away, hitting me in front of our son, spewing profanities about me to our son, threatening to kill himself with a gun if I left him, harassment, and other physical and emotional abuse."
In addition to granting Palmer temporary sole physical and legal custody of Leo, a Los Angeles County judge responded to the emergency filing by granting a temporary restraining order this week. The order states that Jackson is required to stay at least 100 yards away from Palmer and Leodis, as well as any childcare or schooling that has been established for the child.
Leodis' father, per the temporary order, is not allowed to have visitation with his son. A hearing has been set for Dec. 5, which will determine further action on the temporary arrangement.
Reps and lawyers for Palmer did not respond to multiple requests from PEOPLE for comment this week. A rep for Jackson had no comment when reached by PEOPLE on Friday.
The fitness instructor appeared to address the situation in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday night. Sharing a photo that showed him holding his son, he wrote: "I love you, son. See you soon."

Palmer and her ex-boyfriend, who welcomed their son in February, have gone through public difficulties in their relationship in recent months, most notably when Jackson publicly criticized the actress in July for wearing a fitted, black bodysuit under a sheer dress when she watched Usher perform at his Las Vegas Residency.
"It's the outfit tho.. you a mom," he wrote on X at the time.
However, in September, the actress included a series of photos of herself, Jackson and Leodis in New York City.
The pair also celebrated Palmer's 30th birthday together in August, with Jackson posting a tribute to her on X for her milestone celebration.
“Happy Birthday to a one of a kind being,” Jackson wrote in the Aug. 26 post. “Hoping your 30s brings you many joys & triumphs!”
