Kent’s Pothole Blitz is now well underway and many roads around are still to benefit from the project. At the end of 2023, the Government announced that £8.3 billion would be injected into resurfacing and repairing UK roads that have been plagued by potholes.

This large sum of cash was freed up after the northern leg of the HS2 high-speed railway line was ditched. Kent County Council (KCC) will receive a total of £135 million from the fund, known as Network North, until 2034.

Just over £4.2 million will be spent this year and again in 2025/26 to repair the county’s most tired and battered roads. Over £400,000 has already been spent in Medway to tackle the problem, with the same amount allocated to carry on the works over the next year.

Work on the Pothole Blitz commenced in March to allow crews to work in the best weather conditions, and will continue until autumn later this year. Alongside efforts to fill in existing potholes, steps will be made to help prevent such road damage occurring again in the future.

KCC is also making use of its Pothole Pro technology which helps crews deliver repairs more efficiently and means old road surfaces can be removed faster for improvements. This is used alongside smaller equipment, used specifically on narrow roads and in urban environments, reducing working zones and speeding up the repair work while minimising disruption.

A spokesperson for KCC added: “Due to the nature of the works and the already unprecedented demand for road space (including the work of utility companies), the programme is spread over a number of months in a fully co-ordinated way. This minimises the disruption and impact to road users.”

Dates for road closures required for pothole repairs are announced daily, with the latest closure updates posted to the KCC Highways X (formerly Twitter) account here.
