Temperatures are expected to rise across Kent for the rest of the week, with most of the county to see balmy peaks of over 20C in the coming days. Warmer conditions were felt throughout the bank holiday weekend, however this was paired with heavy spells of rain and even some thunder.

The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for parts of England, Wales, and southern Scotland on bank holiday Monday, as it warned that thunderstorms and heavy downpours could cause flooding and travel disruption. The two warnings expired at 9pm on Monday evening (May 6), as showers began to ease across the UK.

According to the latest Met Office forecasts, parts of Kent are set to see the mercury rise to highs of 22C later this week. It seems the coming weekend will bring the warmest days, with the majority of the county to experience optimal temperatures and clear skies throughout.

This is largely thanks to the arrival of a high pressure system which will dominate the UK, bringing about fine and dry weather across most regions. Looking at the coming week, Met Office Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “For many, it’s a generally fine picture and it will stay fine as we go through the next few days because of high pressure that’s going to dominate the story across the UK.

“As we go towards the weekend we’re going to drag in some warmer air and so that’s going to lead to our temperatures rising, a good chance that we could see highs of 25C or 26C by Saturday.” Weather maps from the Met Office show that temperatures will peak here in Kent on Sunday afternoon (May 12), specifically at around 4pm.

During this time, the likes of Dartford, Canterbury, Tenterden, Medway and Tunbridge Wells will feel peaks of around 22C and 21C. Similar highs are expected throughout Saturday afternoon also, with temperatures sitting around the 20C mark for the majority of the county until the evening.

It seems this preferred weather will not be staying for too long however. The long range Met Office forecast for Sunday, May 12 to Tuesday, May 21 adds: “After Sunday, the weather is expected to switch back to become changeable across the country, with further spells of rain and showers expected. Rainfall amounts could be above average in most areas.

“It is also possible that rain will be heavy at times, and any showers could turn thundery. Temperatures are also expected to fall closer to average for May.”
