A Cornish deli and restaurant has announced its closure after less than a year because the cost of living is making it too hard to continue. Kernow Dine and Deli in Falmouth closed its doors for the final time over the weekend despite having opened only eight months ago.

In a post shared on Facebook, the owners, Del and Natasha Crookes, said the cost of energy bills, produce, tax, and a lack of footfall have left them struggling. They added that they will continue to run their wine bar next door and soon introduce some food onto the menu.

The full post said: "We’re sad to say we’re having to close the deli and restaurant after only eight months. We’ve been hit hard by the cost of living crisis, high energy prices, VAT, huge price increases for buying ingredients, a lack of footfall plus ridiculously high duty costs and taxes for alcohol.

The deli was known for its award-winning produce from Cornwall and beyond during the day, such as charcuteries, pasta, cheese, as well as homemade focaccia, freshly baked croissants and fresh salad boxes. By night, the space would transform into a fine-dining restaurant with a monthly changing menu of small plates, with head chef Gabriel Verdi at the helm.

Many customers of the deli took to the comments of the post to share their disappointment at the news. One person wrote: "So sad, I really enjoyed our meal there."

While another commented: "That’s a real shame for you, we really enjoyed our family lunch with you back in early June. All the very best and hopefully you can reopen sometime in the future."

Someone else said: "So sorry to hear this! Probably the best meal I've ever had in Falmouth..."

A fourth added: "Gosh I am really sorry to hear this. It's a tough time out there." Another wrote: "Oh no! That's sad news, glad the wine bar is still going strong!"
