Kerry Katona has admitted she was unable to fully read and write until she was in her twenties.

The former Atomic Kitten singer, who is also dyslexic, took literacy courses in the early 2000s while her then husband Brian McFadden was on tour with Westlife.

Speaking to Ireland AM, Katona said: "I remember when I first moved to Ireland with Brian, I was pregnant, I couldn’t read or write. I was dyslexic."

She added: "With Brian being on tour all the time, I did a typing course and I taught myself how to read and write properly."

Katona also detailed a time where she could not read a restaurant menu: "I remember we were in a restaurant with Atomic Kitten and I couldn’t read the restaurant, our manager had to read it for me.

"I’ll never forget, we were in a Mexican restaurant and Liz ordered fajitas and I was like, 'Oh my God, she’s going to eat a dead baby.' Fajitas, fetus. That’s how uneducated I was with food."

Katona said that her lack of literacy was down to being dyslexic and hardly attending school as she went through a series of foster parents, refuges and eight different schools during her childhood.

The singer left Atomic Kitten in 2001 after becoming pregnant and subsequently embarked on a reality TV career though briefly reunited with the girl group in 2013.

She has recently been dealing with some health issues relating to her hip which have at times left her bedbound.

Katona wrote in her OK column: "I'm in a bad way this week with my hips and my back — I'm in so much pain, I've essentially been bedbound. My hips have been out of place for a long time, and now it's got to the point where the pain is making me feel physically sick."

She also suffered a number of complications after having a tummy tuck in 2021.
