Kevin Costner Remains Open To Returning To ‘Yellowstone’ “Under The Right Circumstances”

Kevin Costner has reiterated that he has not shut the door on returning to Yellowstone.

“I’ve supported that thing and I’ve loved it,” he told Savannah Guthrie Monday on Today. “It’s been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances I think that all of us want. For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances.”

Part 2 of the fifth and final season is slated to premiere sometime in November. Paramount has yet to announced the exact release date.

“Saying there’s a chance, there’s always a chance,” he continued. “I love the thing. You’ve got to be really clear about that.”

Four and a half seasons of the Taylor Sheridan series have followed the Dutton family, led by patriarch Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who oversees the largest cattle ranch in the modern-day United States. He told Deadline in an interview in May that he made a contract to play Dutton for seasons five, six and seven. “After a two- or three-month negotiation, they made another contract, Costner told Deadline. “They wanted to redo that one, and instead of seasons six and seven, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’ll do six. They weren’t able to make those. Horizon was set in the middle, but Yellowstone was first position. I fit [Horizon] into the gaps. They just kept moving their gaps.

Costner told Deadline he did what was asked of him and lived up to the “truth of the contract.” He said he never shot the second half of season five because “there was no script. And then things imploded.”

“Number one, I did it for five years, OK, and I want to work more than once a year,” he told Today. “We lost an entire year at one point and I thought, ‘Well that can’t ever happen again.’ It was well over a year.

“And I said, ‘I just have to be in position to make the things.’ There’s a chance to do both of them, but material has to be ready at certain times, and we weren’t able to do that.”

Chapter 1 of Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is set to hit theaters on June 28.
