Kevin Costner remembers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as “Field of Dreams” extras

“They were on fire,” the “Yellowstone” star said.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were among the extras in a Fenway Park sequence in Field of Dreams — and Kevin Costner remembers them.

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Bodyguard star recalled his memories of the future stars. “They were sitting in the stands, like college guys, and they came up, and they both leaned in at the same time, leaned back at the same time, looked at each other at the same time as we talked,” he says. “And they had this big enthusiasm. They were on fire. I do remember them, absolutely.”

Jimmy Kimmel read a text message from Damon wherein the Bourne Identity star discussed his own recollections of that project. “I remember it well,” the text said. “I literally had an Untouchables poster on my wall. He came out and hung around with the extras between setups. I asked him what he was doing, and he said, ‘Shooting the s---’ and I laughed like a 12-year-old girl. It was a big deal for us, because he had the exact career that we wanted. He was very nice to us.”

Earlier in the Kimmel interview, Costner reflected on his emotional reaction to the 11-minute standing ovation at the premiere of his movie Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 at Cannes. “I actually started walking my life backwards for a second,” he says. “I kinda went back to the beginning and wondering, you know, how I even ended up at a place like that. We all have these dreams where we wanna be, and I had my own, and I’ve taken some really big bites out of life, and life has taken some really big ones out of me. But I kind of just keep going, and when they started to clap and they didn’t stop, I didn’t really know what — I didn’t f---ing cry. I didn’t cry. My eyes were full.”

Kimmel also asked Costner about how he responded to his directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. “What happened was, when I had the success with Dances, I just wanted to keep going,” he said. “I didn’t feel empowered…I just felt like, ‘I need to do better. I’m gonna do better, I’m gonna find other movies.’ That was a special moment for me, but I never felt like that was the one I was gonna live off of. I thought, ‘I need to go forward.’”
