Kevin Costner got a little emotional after hearing his son's kind words about working together on their new film, Horizon: An American Saga.

The actor, 69, spoke with Access Hollywood at the premiere of his movie, where he was joined by his 15-year-old son Hayes, who also appears in the film. When asked about what it was like working with his dad, Hayes didn't hold back praising Costner.

"It was so fun. Just working with my dad, I loved it," Hayes told the outlet. "He just taught me everything and he was there directing by my side and it was just amazing to watch him direct because I've never seen it before. I've only seen him act before."

Costner appeared to get emotional hearing his son's words, and when asked how it felt to hear that kind of praise from his son, the actor shared, "It feels good." Holding back tears, Costner put on sunglasses and placed an arm around his son as they continued the interview.

Speaking with PEOPLE earlier this week about his new movie, Costner opened up about working with Sienna Miller, who plays Hayes' mother in the film. After seeing him direct his son, Costner said that Miller had a note for the star.

"She's our leading lady. She's incredible in the movie. And she came to me one time, she says, 'You're kind of hard on Hayes,' " Costner told PEOPLE. "And I said, 'I know. I need him to be really good, and he's inexperienced and I'm going to help him all the way through.'"

"And in the end, Hayes started doing some things on his own that were just magical, and I'm really proud of his performance," added the proud dad.

Earlier this month, Hayes opened up to PEOPLE about what it was like working with his dad on the film.

"It felt like the greatest way that we could bond over something we both love and to create lasting memories together," said Hayes, who shares his name with Costner's Horizon character, Hayes Ellison. "Working with my dad was an unforgettable moment in time."

Hayes said his father was “focused and meticulous" when directing and "always gentle" in offering feedback, but quickly reverted to "dad mode" at the end of the day: "I think that's my favorite time with him."
