Kim Kardashian Hopes Gypsy Rose Blanchard 'Heals' After Prison Reform Meeting: 'People Should Have Second Chances'

Though Kim acknowledged it's "controversial" to help people "who were involved in something so violent," she said she's taking Gypsy's "entire background into consideration" because "it's really crazy not to"

Kim Kardashian wants nothing but the best for Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

On the July 11 episode of The Kardashians, Kim and Gypsy met up in New Orleans after Gypsy reached out asking to discuss prison reform. Their meeting came shortly after Gypsy was released from prison in December 2023 after serving more than eight years for the murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard in June 2015.

Before Kim arrived, she explained to cameras that Gypsy ended up behind bars after she and her then-boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, were both charged with the killing of Dee Dee. After their arrests, it was discovered that Dee Dee subjected Gypsy to unnecessary medical treatments and convinced her daughter and others that Gypsy had a litany of illnesses as a child. In court, it was argued Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a form of child abuse that involves a guardian exaggerating or inducing illness to gain sympathy.

"How sick must you be as a mother that you would let your child have surgery for your own gain," Kim, 43, said.

As she prepared to meet Gypsy for the first time, Kim added to cameras, "She could be really impactful with the youth and abuse... I heard she wants to get in [prison reform] and I can guide her [with] exactly where to go and how she can help."

After the two finally met at the Four Seasons Hotel, Gypsy opened up about her time behind bars, life after her release and what she wants to accomplish in the future. She also praised Kim for meeting with her, noting that not many people would have taken on the opportunity.

"I give you massive kudos right now because I think a lot of people are afraid of touching me as a topic, because I'm too controversial," Gypsy told the reality star, adding how her life has been a "rollercoaster ride" and she's "blessed to be given a second chance."

"No one was ever a guiding light for me," she told the SKIMS founder.

Kim brushed off Gypsy's concerns about being "controversial" and doubled down on the reason she was there.

"When Gypsy posted that she wanted to get into reform work and she wanted to connect, I really wanted to guide her to use her platform to really help people," she said in a confessional, later adding, "I know it’s a controversial subject when people want to help people that were involved in something so violent but I do believe people should have second chances in life and I take her entire background into consideration — it's really crazy not to."

Gypsy went on to explain how it feels like "half" the world wants to "condemn" her because she "did something wrong," while the other half is "rooting for me." Because of this, Gypsy said she's experiencing an "internal battle."

In response, Kim encouraged her to "post and then ghost," and simply ignore the outside noise. "Not everything has to be such a deep message. The way you live your life moving forward is the deep message," she advised.

Gypsy then revealed she had asked for one-on-one therapy in prison to help process the trauma she went through but was told she "didn't qualify."

Stunned by this revelation, Kim said, "You would think that they'd want to set you up and give you all of the tools that you would need to be as mentally stable and to be as healed as possible to come home into society. Why wouldn't they set up all of these programs? It always blows my mind."

Calling it "a problem," Kim added in a confessional, "Ultimately, we want to bring people home that are rehabilitated, and how can we do that if it doesn't start with giving them the tools and having them go through therapy before they get home?"

Gypsy agreed, noting, "The system is built to fail. I want to bring awareness, I want to be the person that I wish I had to guide me, but I feel very new at it."

Kim proudly reassured her that she "can help with that" and offered to introduce Gypsy to her team in hopes they can bring more therapy programs into prison and "change the way the system operates."

"I hope Gypsy follows her heart, I hope she heals, first and foremost, and I hope she follows her path of wanting to help other people," the SKIMS mogul concluded.

Kim has been on a long journey to becoming a lawyer. Since 2019, she has been vocal about her passion for law and her private schooling journey. The reality star consistently advocates for wrongfully convicted inmates or those with unfair sentences. Her first legal success came when Kim successfully campaigned for the clemency of grandmother Alice Marie Johnson, who was sentenced to life in prison for a nonviolent offense.

In April 2023, she revealed that she would be willing to give up her life on camera to pursue the profession. "I would be just as happy being an attorney full time," she said at the TIME100 Summit, adding that she hopes becoming a lawyer will be "her life's most meaningful work."
