King Charles addresses nation for first time after cancer diagnosis
King Charles III will pledge to “continue to serve to the best of his ability” in a new video message to the Commonwealth.
The monarch is issuing the address for Commonwealth Day, and will be shown to 2000 guests at Westminster Abbey.
It’s Charles’s first address since he was diagnosed with cancer last month, with his speech giving nod to the support he’s received in recent weeks.
The King is expected to say: “Having recently celebrated my own 75th birthday, it warms my heart to reflect on the way the Commonwealth has been a constant throughout my own life — a precious source of strength, inspiration and pride.
“In recent weeks, I have been most deeply touched by your wonderfully kind and thoughtful good wishes for my health and, in return, can only continue to serve you, to the best of my ability, throughout the Commonwealth.”
Despite his ongoing treatment, Charles is thought to be keen to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Samoa.
The King’s speech comes amidst ongoing speculation about the Princess of Wales.
Last month, Kensington Palace announced Kate Middleton had undergone abdominal surgery, and would not return to public duties until after Easter.
Despite clear and reasonable requests for privacy, social media has been ablaze with theories about Kate’s whereabouts, prompting Kensington Palace to issue a second statement pertaining to her health.
“We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when something was significant,” reps for the pair told the media.
For Mother’s Day, a new photo of Kate was released, accompanied by her three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
However, four international photo agencies have retracted the latest picture over concerns it has been “manipulated”.
In a new statement issued on social media, Kate has since apologised for the furore the photograph caused.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.
“I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day.”
