King Charles and Queen Camilla may skip 'wedding of the year' twenty years after family feud

King Charles and Queen Camilla might skip the year's most anticipated society wedding, as they haven't confirmed their presence at Hugh, Duke of Westminster's upcoming marriage to Olivia Henson next month.

The possibility of the King and Queen not attending has been compared to when they previously turned down an invite to the wedding of the duke's sister, Lady Tamara Grosvenor, in 2004.

Lady Tamara tied the knot with Edward van Cutsem, who is the godson of King Charles, at Chester Cathedral, the same location chosen for the upcoming nuptials.

Back then, Camilla, who was still known as Parker Bowles, faced restrictions; she was told she couldn't arrive with or sit alongside the then Prince Charles and had to be seated several rows behind, OK! reports.

Richard Eden from MailOnline cites a source saying: "Their Majesties have not forgotten what happened at the wedding of Hugh's sister. There is still a lot of tension that exists."

Royal commentator Sarah Bradford disclosed that Queen Elizabeth II was quite irritated by how things were handled, advising her son that the situation needed to change.

A royal insider at the time commented: "Her Majesty is a stickler for protocol. It would be inappropriate for Mrs Parker Bowles to sit beside Prince Charles since she has no official standing".

The mood surrounding the upcoming wedding was already tense, and it escalated with whispers that Emilie van Cutsem, the groom's mother, had a spat with Camilla after they allegedly exchanged criticisms about each other's children's manners.

With the wedding just around the corner, the then Prince of Wales pulled out, claiming he needed to visit Warminster barracks to spend time with families of soldiers in Iraq, while Camilla was said to be 'otherwise engaged'.

In a move raising eyebrows, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been conspicuously omitted from the guest list for the forthcoming marriage ceremony, despite Hugh being chosen as godfather to their son, Archie.

Rumours suggest that the duke harbours concerns that the Sussexes' attendance could cause a stir within the Royal Family, particularly following an accidental save the date email sent to them.

A confidant of the couple shared: "Harry called Hugh and said it would be too awkward if he and Meghan Markle attended, so he made his apologies and Hugh understood."

Nonetheless, Harry's elder brother, Prince William is set to be present at the event and is rumoured to be acting as an usher.

Whether Prince George, another of the Duke's godchildren, will make an appearance remains uncertain.
