King Charles Receives Well-Wishes for Kate Middleton on Easter as They Both Undergo Cancer Treatment

The King shared a private lunch with his daughter-in-law just before she shared her health update with the world

Kate Middleton may have missed Easter with the royal family as she receives cancer treatment, but King Charles received well wishes on his daughter-in-law's behalf as he stepped out for the holiday.

The King and Queen Camilla took part in a surprise walkabout after church at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Sunday, where one well-wisher shared words of support for Princess Kate.

"Best wishes to the Princess of Wales," said a woman holding a Welsh flag and festively dressed in its colors. "Thank you very much," the King replied in a video shared on X by Rebecca English of the Daily Mail.

King Charles, 75, is also undergoing treatment for cancer, a diagnosis that Buckingham Palace announced on Feb. 5, making this an unprecedented time for the British royal family as two senior members have cancer.

The monarch shared a positive outlook about his health on Sunday while meeting another member of the public after the Easter Mattins Service.

"Get well soon, Your Majesty," a woman told the King as she shook his hand. With a slight smile, King Charles replied, "I'm doing my best!"

As King Charles and Princess Kate, 42, both navigate their cancer diagnoses, they have each other for support. The pair met up for a private lunch on March 21, just one day before Kate revealed her health update to the world.

"He has always had a very good bond with her. I don’t think it is presumptuous to say that she is like the daughter he never had," royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s cover story. "He shares with William an impulse to protect her. They are in this together, Kate and the King."

Buckingham Palace said that the monarch was "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did" to announce her cancer news.

King Charles and Queen Camilla, 76, were joined by a smaller group of family than usual at church on Easter Sunday, as the monarch’s doctors have advised him limit the number of people he comes in contact with while receiving cancer treatment.

The contingent didn’t include Princess Kate and Prince William, who were not expected to step out for the holiday church service with their kids Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, like they have in past years.

Easter fell nine days after Princess Kate released a personal video message to announce that she is receiving cancer treatment, and her family likely spent the weekend privately at home. Princess Kate referenced her husband and children multiple times in her self-written speech, giving insight into how her young family has been top of mind during this time.

The Princess of Wales said that she and William took time to "explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them" and asked for "time, space and privacy" for her family as she completes treatment. Kate explained that she was receiving "preventative chemotherapy" after tests following her abdominal surgery in January "found cancer had been present."

"My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery," Kate said from her seat on a bench in the garden of Windsor Castle before a row of bright yellow daffodils, a symbol of hope for those facing cancer.
