Netflix has announced that the third film in the franchise will follow a new murder mystery in a yet-to-be-disclosed setting and will feature another eccentric slate of suspects getting vetted by returning detective Benoit Blanc (Craig). Last week, Johnson posted that the movie is set to begin production soon.

Renner continues his return to the Hollywood fray after being run over by a snowcat at his home in Reno, Nevada, on Jan. 1, 2023. Known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor filmed Mayor of Kingstown a year after the accident, with new episodes for the Paramount+ drama series launching next month.

The initial Knives Out, from Lionsgate, hit theaters in 2019 and collected more than $310 million at the worldwide box office. It featured an ensemble cast that included Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Plummer.

THR previously reported that Netflix paid more than $450 million for a pair of sequels. Its first follow-up, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, launched on the streamer in 2022 with Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista among the castmembers.

Deadline was first to report the news of Renner’s casting.
