'I know I would' - Celtic legend sends Martin Dubravka Newcastle United transfer message

Chris Sutton has encouraged Martin Dubravka to depart Newcastle this summer for a fresh start at Celtic.

Dubravka played a vital part in the Magpies’ season in the absence of the injured Nick Pope, but the strong links to Burnley’s James Trafford may leave the Slovakian international as third choice in Eddie Howe’s plans.

There are big gloves to fill in Glasgow in the form of the retiring Joe Hart who departs Celtic Park as a firm fan favourite, with Sutton likening Dubravka’s career to be in a similar position as the former England number one’s when he made the journey north of the border.

“At 35-years-old he probably has one more big move in him,” wrote Sutton in the Daily Record. “He’s played a lot of games for Newcastle in the last year but isn’t going to be first choice.

“There’s every chance he saw what Hart achieved at Celtic and fancies a bit of that himself. Does he sit tight and ride out his final year at Newcastle as a back up, or perhaps drop down the division in England to get a regular game?

“Or does he come to Celtic, play every week and be in with the chance of winning silverware, while playing in the Champions League? I know what I would be doing.”

In any regard, it is likely that Newcastle would want to move on Dubravka before June 30 in their hopes to balance the books and comply with PSR regulations, while the keeper has laid clear he intends to focus on EURO 2024 first and foremost before worrying about his future.
