From meeting every member of staff at the training ground and stadium to conducting his first interview, Chris Davies had a packed first day in the Birmingham City hot-seat.

The new manager reported for duty on Monday after agreeing to succeed Tony Mowbray on a four-year contract. Davies arrived at the first team’s base in Henley-in-Arden to be greeted by technical director Craig Gardner for the grand tour of the club’s facility.

In addition to Gardner, Davies conversed with chief executive Garry Cook – who splits his time between the training ground and St Andrew’s – and academy technical director Mike Rigg. Ex-Manchester City director of football Rigg was involved in Blues’ search for Davies and his brief extends beyond just academy recruitment.

Footage also showed Davies in discussion with Krystian Bielik. The duo weren’t mic’d up so we can only hazard a guess as to what they were talking about but their conversation ended with a handshake.

Bielik is expected to be one of the players in demand following relegation to League One but Blues hope to keep him. Given the lack of an international tournament next season, Bielik might be willing to stomach a season in League One.

Regular visitors to the Elite Performance and Innovation Centre will testify that it’s an impressive facility. While Davies was clearly impressed by the state-of-the-art gym, canteen and pitches, it was something inside the changing room which caught his eye.

The words to the club’s iconic anthem, Keep Right On, are plastered on the wall in the dressing room. Davies took one look around before turning to Gardner and saying: “It’s a great song that, isn’t it?”

Once the tour was complete, Davies drove to St Andrew’s for the stadium experience. Cook was eager to show off the two enormous screens at either end of the pitch and explained some of the improvements which have been made during the close season.

Davies introduced himself to virtually every staff member but he appeared a little starstruck when he was introduced to the legendary Jasper Carrott. Carrott welcomed Davies to ‘the greatest city in the world’ before asking the new Blues boss whether he plays golf. Presumably Carrott is looking for a new partner for the club’s charity golf days.

Davies is one of the few people involved in football who doesn’t play golf, though. He prefers tennis. Carrott doesn’t plan to join him on the court.
