Election night is coming but if you feel like you need a little break from all that, BBC4 has the perfect escape as it turns over its schedule to Kylie Minogue. The news bulletins are going to be packed with politics on Friday, July 5 - the day after voting takes place - with the possibility of a new government taking over in Downing Street.

But the Kylie night on BBC 4 will kick off at 9pm on Friday, July 5, with a 90-minute compilation programme called Kylie at the BBC, featuring the best of the Australian's performances for the broadcaster. The documentary takes viewers through her career, and features her collaborations with Robbie Williams, Nick Cave and Jason Donovan.

And then, at 10.30pm, the pop star's performance in Leicester last summer will be shown in a 65-minute programme. Kylie joined bands including Tears for Fears, Texas and the Pretenders in performing at the two days of music at Victoria Park in Leicester. She performed many of her greatest hits, as well as new tracks from the recent album Tension.

After that programme, at 11.35pm, there will be Stock, Aitken and Waterman at The BBC, featuring more of Kylie, as well as Rick Astley, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, Bananarama, and Mel and Kim.

Kylie first shot to fame playing Charlene on Neighbours in 1986 and scored her first UK number one in 1988 with I Should Be So Lucky. Although she was still in her teens when she became a star in the UK, Kylie was already a seasoned showbiz veteran in her native Australia.

She’d made her TV debut at the age of 10 in the series The Sullivans and gone onto appear on the shows The Henderson Kids and Skyways. However, her acting career took a backseat to music following the success of I Should Be So Lucky.

With production and song-writing trio Stock Aitken Waterman, she notched up a string of catchy hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s - including a chart-topping duet, Especially For You, with her Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan. Further acclaimed singles included Confide in Me and Spinning Around.

She’s kept her status as a pop princess ever since – last year, she was back in the top UK 10 with Padam Padam, 35 years after her first hit.
