Chris Ward wins Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven after short campaign

Chris Ward has won Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven after a short campaign.

Mr Ward was selected to represent Labour in the seat on May 31 after Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who had held the seat since 2017, was suspended from the party two days prior.

He won 17,893 votes and had a majority of almost 10,000.

Turn out was lower than the 2019 General Election at 59.96 per cent, to 69.5 per cent.

He was up against Elaine Hills from the Green party, who got 7,997 votes, and the Conservatives’ Khobi Vallis with 8,230.

Mr Ward said: "The last time I was in this sports hall playing cricket next door as a kid.

"If you told me then I would be here as a Member of Parliament in a city I love I would never have believed you.

"I know I stand in a long line of Labour MPs who have represented this constituency."

In 2019 in the seat, Mr Russell-Moyle had a majority of 8,061 and more than half of the vote share at 25,033 votes.

It has been a remarkable night so far for Mr Ward’s party which has won by a landslip.
