Following the result, Mr Sunak said: “On this difficult night, I’d like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support.”

He added: “The Labour Party has won this General Election, and I’ve called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory. Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry.”

It comes as Labour has reached 300 seats as 416 constituency results have been declared, securing 37.4% share of the vote.

The Conservatives have 58 seats and a 21.2% vote share. The Liberal Democrats have won in 37 constituencies with 10.6% of the overall vote, while Reform UK have 14.9% of the vote, translating to success in four seats.

The SNP has four seats and Plaid Cymru is on four. The Green Party has 6.9% of the votes and one seat.

All three Coventry seats were successfully defended by Labour. In Warwickshire the Tories lost four seats out of five in total that they had held since the previous General Election in 2019.

Nuneaton, North Warwickshire and Rugby were taken by Labour while the Lib Dems won Stratford-on-Avon. Warwick and Leamington was already held by Labour previously and defended by Matt Western and Kenilworth and Southam was a Conservative hold.
