Labour wins all Glasgow seats as SNP support crumbles in general election rout

Scottish Labour has swept the board in Glasgow by winning all six seats in Scotland's largest city at the expense of the SNP.

It was a night to forget for the Nationalists with some of the party's most high-profile parliamentarians losing out.

Alison Thewlis, a former SNP economy spokeswoman, was defeated in the Glasgow North constituency to Martin Rhodes.

David Linden, a former social justice spokesman, lost out in Glasgow East to John Grady.

Glasgow South - which includes much of Nicola Sturgeon's Holyrood constituency - saw former SNP defence spokesman Stewart McDonald defeated by Gordon McKee.

The clean sweep of Glasgow seats caps a remarkable political comeback for Scottish Labour after it almost wiped out in Scotland at the 2015 and 2019 general elections.

Anas Sarwar, the party's leader north of the Border, arrived at the Glasgow count at the Emirates Arena to loud cheers from his supporters.

He said it was going to be a "good night" for Labour before joining his candidates to watch the results being announced.

The loss of all seats in Glasgow will be a bitter blow to the SNP, who spent years working to end decades of Labour dominance in the city.

Speaking to journalists, Sarwar said he was “absolutely delighted” with his party’s performance and thanked the people of Scotland for “putting their faith and trust in the Scottish Labour Party”.

“I understand their desire for change, I know there’ll be a huge sigh of relief that we finally ended 14 years of total chaos and failure,” he said.

The Scottish Labour leader conceded it would “not be an easy road” for a Labour government but the party would “get to work straight away”.
