Labour's John Grady says Glasgow's best days are ahead after winning Glasgow East
Labour's John Grady has said Glasgow's best days are ahead of it after winning the Glasgow East seat in the 2024 General Election.
Grady won the seat with 15, 543 votes - beating Scottish National Party's David Linden, who raked in 11,759.
The result means that Linden will no longer be the MP of the constituency, after holding the position since 2017.
Also standing for Glasgow East was Michael James Clark of the Scottish Liberal Democrats who received 872 votes, Thomas Kerr of the Scottish Conservatives who got 1,707 votes and Amy Kettyles from the Scottish Greens who got 2,727.
Meanwhile, Liam McLaughlin of the Scottish Socialist Party received 466 votes and Donnie McLeod got 2,371.
Following the result, John Grady said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected as a member of parliament for Glasgow East.
“I thank all of the voters in Glasgow East who put their trust in me. It is my duty and honour as an MP to represent each and every resident, and I will work in the interest of each of you, to be a voice and representative for a wonderful community.
“Everyone of us at Scottish Labour will continue to work tirelessly to win the trust of the people of Scotland, so that Scotland can have the change it desperately needs.
“We at Scottish Labour love Glasgow and we are determined to make sure that its best days are ahead of it.”
We also caught up with Thomas Kerr ahead of the results, who referred to the Tories electoral campaign as a challenge.
He explained: "Here in Glasgow, people are fed up with the Scottish National Party and the votes have gone to Labour to try and get the SNP out.
“We’ve been in power for 14 years, it’s a long time and there is a feeling out there, amongst the general public, that they are just scunnered with politics in general. 17 years of SNP failures and incompetence is why Labour are getting the victory up here and down south it’s us that’s getting it.”
It comes after we previously reported that Labour have gained all six seats in Glasgow.
The results are as follows:
Glasgow North East Maureen Burke
Glasgow East John Grady
Glasgow South Gordon McKee
Glasgow West Patricia Ferguson
Glasgow South West Dr Zubir Ahmed
Glasgow North Martin Rhodes
Following the result, John Grady said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected as a member of parliament for Glasgow East.
“I thank all of the voters in Glasgow East, who put their trust in me. It is my duty and honour as an MP to represent each and every resident of Glasgow East and I will work in the interest of each and every one, to be a voice and representative for a wonderful community.
“I will do everything I can to maintain your trust in Scottish Labour and I will do everything that I can to deliver the trust that people have put in Scottish Labour.
“Each and everyone of us in the Scottish Labour Party will continue to work tirelessly to win the trust of the people of Scotland, so that Scotland can have the change it desperately needs.
“We at Scottish Labour love Glasgow and we are determined to make sure that its best days are ahead of it.”
