And the bride wore… five dresses. Yes, we’re talking about the predictably fairytale-like nuptials between Princess Diana’s Niece Lady Kitty Spencer, 30, and millionaire owner of Whistles and Phase Eight retailers Michael Lewis, 62, of course.
After roughly three years of courting the notoriously private pair wed at Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati this weekend, surrounded by family, friends and famous faces including Pixie Lott and Sabrina Dhowre Elba.
Despite the newlyweds’ high society status, Lady Spencer and Lewis - who share a 32 year age gap - have left next to no trail of how they met or hit it off. Curious? What we do know is in the timeline below.
August 2018: Rumours circulate
Speculation that Lady Spencer and businessman Lewis were dating began when the Mail on Sunday revealed that the pair had reportedly been spending a lot of time together after an introduction by former Defence Secretary Liam Fox.
May 2019: Pictured as a pair
The first paparazzi photograph of the pair surfaces as they are spotted slipping out of The Mark Hotel (costing up to £50,000 per night for the penthouse suite) in Manhattan, New York, separately, and into the same car.
August 2019: Spotted smooching
Confirming that they are indeed coupled up, Lady Spencer and Lewis are photographed holidaying in St Tropez, and are papped pausing for a kiss outside Club 55.
13th November, 2019: Is that… a ring?
Lady Spencer is photographed leaving a hair appointment in Chelsea, London, wearing what seems to be a large diamond engagement ring on the appropriate finger, although these images are not released until January 2020, when the pair announce their engagement.
January 2020: The confirmation
A source close to the couple told The Daily Mail, “Michael proposed to Kitty before Christmas. She’s been in Cape Town for the holidays and told her mother and the rest of the family. Michael is loved by all of them. Despite his wealth, he’s very humble and low key.”
5th May 2021: Lady Spencer speaks out about keeping schtum
After radio silence from the couple, in the Summer issue of Town and Country magazine, Lady Spencer reveals she is hesitant about discussing her love life. “I feel less vulnerable when I don’t discuss things like my love life. I just think, ‘Really, what’s that got to do with anyone else?’ It shouldn’t make a difference to anyone’s day. Who I love or don’t love, or have a crush on or don’t have a crush on, or go on a date with, I don’t know why that should be what somebody reads over their cornflakes. As long as I keep it sacred, then it can remain so. As soon as I don’t, I don’t think you can get it back.”
24th July 2021: The wedding
At 6pm, the pair tied the knot at Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, Italy. Lady Spencer’s father and Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, wasn’t spotted at the ceremony, though her twin sisters Lady Eliza and Amelia were present alongside her two brothers Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp, and Samuel Aitken who walked her down the aisle. Lewis’s three adult children were also in attendance and the newly married couple were photographed from afar toasting the occasion on the terrace.
