NHS Lanarkshire is asking hospital visitors to please avoid visiting relatives and friends in hospital if they are feeling unwell.

The plea aims to curb any spread of contagious viral illnesses to help protect patients and staff and keep our hospitals safe.

Ruth Thompson, NHS Lanarkshire Acute Director of Nursing, said: “If you’re feeling unwell, it's important to take care of yourself and not to spread germs.

“When you're feeling unwell, especially if you have a sore throat or cough, flu-like symptoms or are experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting, please do not visit someone who is in hospital. You should wait until at least 48 hours after the symptoms have passed before visiting anyone.

“We understand you want to support your loved ones but by staying home when you're not well, you're helping to protect your loved one, other patients and our staff.

“Many of our patients are already vulnerable, meaning that any infection they are exposed to could potentially be more serious. Hospital visitors therefore have an important role to play in preventing the spread of infection.

“Other infection prevention and control measures when visiting patients such as hand washing and use of alcohol-based hand rubs can also reduce the spread of infections.

“Please help us to keep our hospitals a safe and healthy environment for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
