A vacant bingo hall in Birmingham has been put on the market for more than £1 million - but it comes with conditions for potential buyers. The former Gala Bingo hall in Stockland Green is on sale for £1.7 million and is being marketed with potential for a residential development.

The once-thriving Gala, then Buzz bingo hall occupied the building until 2020 when it closed down. The property is a landmark in the area, but it is unlikely that prospective buyers will be able to restore it to its former glory, because the sale comes with plans for more than 50 apartments.

The hall, marketed by Bond Wolfe, comes with two separate pre-planning approved schemes for up to 55 apartments - and a search has been launched for the 'right' buyer. The area is highly built up, with agents touting it as a "superb development opportunity." Many Brummies will have fond memories of the former hall on Streetly Road and the footprint of the property shows just how vast the entertainment space was.

Bond Wolfe said the 0.48-acre site currently houses the vacant former bingo hall and a cinema, which extends to 20,715 sq ft on the ground, mezzanine, first and second floors. But that is likely to be consigned to history, with one of the pre-application approved designs for a build-to-rent scheme of between 51 and 55 apartments and the other for 44 to 46 sheltered housing apartments for the over 55s.

The senior living complex would include three lounges, a fitness studio, gym, laundry, staff and scooter rooms. James Mattin, managing director agency at Birmingham-based Bond Wolfe explained: “This is superb development opportunity in a prominent location at the junction of Streetly Road and Marsh Lane in Stockland Green, to the north of Birmingham city centre.

“The area generally contains dwellings with heights of two, three and more storeys, with the immediate neighbouring buildings having substantial footprints, such as The Village Green Inn.

“The local area is very urban and built-up, with the busy five-road junction being a focused centre for the district with many individual and local shops, pubs and restaurants.” He went on: “Good quality housing is needed in areas like this, and the plans for this property could provide a major opportunity for the right developer.

“As well as the two pre-application approved designs, alternative schemes may well be considered subject to planning consent. For example, the vendor has also previously had plans drawn up for a 61 to 63 unit scheme for housing associations, charities or other institutions focusing on short-term accommodation.”
