Large emergency service response after fire breaks out at former pub in Oldham

Fire crews raced to Oldham this afternoon after a blaze broke out at a former pub. The fire took hold at the derelict Spinners Arms building on Manchester Road in Hollinwood before the alarm was raised shortly before 1:30pm.

Four fire engines attended the scene and firefighters donned breathing apparatus as they tackled the flames. It is not believed anyone has been injured.

The fire has now been extinguished however crews remain at the scene on the major thoroughfare's junction with Baxter Street, as do police.

Pictures from the scene showed charred and fire damaged material at the back of the boarded up building. The pub is understood to have been 'long-term closed.'

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 1.20pm today (Saturday, 4 May), four fire engines from Oldham, Hollins, Blackley and Ashton-under-Lyne fire stations were called to attend a fire at a derelict pub on Manchester Road, Oldham.

“Crews arrived quickly and used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. Firefighters remain at the scene at this time.”

No further details about the fire, including its suspected cause, have yet been released.
