Welsh boxer Lauren Price defeated American Jessica McCaskill on home soil to become Wales' first female boxing world champion.

The fight, which took place on Saturday, May 11 at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff, saw Price become unified IBO, WBA and Ring Magazine welterweight world champion.

The ninth round saw the fight brought to a halt due to an eye injury to McCaskill after a clash of heads. The judges ruled the bout 90-82, 90-82, 90-82 in the Ystrad Mynach fighter's favour.

Price was competing in only her seventh professional fight after a stellar amateur career that brought Olympic gold in Tokyo three years ago

Price was absolutely ecstatic with the result. She said: "I'm speechless. Coming out here tonight, the atmosphere has got to be up there with winning Olympic gold.

"I can't thank everybody enough, it means the world. Credit to my opponent, I respect her, she's a credit to women's boxing and boxing in general.

"I want to build a legacy and create greatness. This is just the start. You see what Katie Taylor did for Ireland, I want to do the same for Wales.

"I'd love to sell out the Principality Stadium, that's the dream."

A former footballer, Price entered the ring with 'Yma O Hyd' by Dafydd Iwan blasting around the arena, followed up by Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau to really raise the temperature inside the venue.

English pair Chantelle Cameron and Sandy Ryan will now likely be in Price's sights as she moves to target lucrative matches.

Also fighting on the night was Tyson Fury's cousin Hughie, who defeated German Patrick Korte.
