Layton charged in mother's death

May 3—MEIGS — Thomas County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Meigs man in connection to the death of Lana Layton.

According to Thomas County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, deputies were dispatched to the 9000 block of Nine Dime Doctor Road in Meigs on Wednesday, May 1, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, relatives led deputies to the body of Layton, who was found deceased in a wooded area behind her home.

Her body was then sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy on Thursday, where her cause of death was ruled a blunt force trauma.

Layton's son, James Mitchell Layton. has been charged with aggravated assault, felony murder, malice murder and concealing a death.

Deputies said they believe James Layton killed his mother earlier that morning. He is now being held in the Thomas County Jail, while Layton's death investigation is continued by TCSO and the GBI Region 9 Field Office.
