The League of Gentlemen is set to return to the BBC for three special episodes later this year.

Speaking at the Edinburgh festival, BBC Two controller Patrick Holland described the return as “much anticipated”.

The trio of shows will mark the 20th anniversary of the award-winning series which began as a radio programme before making to the move to TV in 1999.

The surreal comedy was set in the fictional village of Royston Vasey and followed the antics of its bizarre inhabitants.

Last year two of The League of Gentleman’s creators, Mark Gatiss and Steve Pemberton, hinted the series could return.

Pemberton told the Daily Mirror: "I think there is still an appetite for it, people still remember it, we are all still great mates and I see no reason why not. We won't rush it, it's something we want to go get it right."

The League of Gentleman stars aren’t the only comedy giants set to make a return to the BBC in the near future.

Earlier this month it was announced that Steve Coogan would be reprising his role as Alan Partridge to become the ‘voice of Brexit’ in a new series for the broadcaster.

Speaking to the New European Coogan explained: “Alan would have voted Brexit for sure. Hard Brexit, given the choice. He’s a Brexiteer because the Daily Mail told him to be.”
