Viewers of The 1% Club were left astounded after a tricky question wiped out a third of the contestants.

Gasps could be heard all around ITV studios, as 32 contestants lost their places on Saturday's show in a single round.

The quiz show sees 100 people solve tricky riddles and word and number puzzles in a strict time frame to scoop a possible £100,000 cash pot, with questions getting harder and harder as the show progresses. And while a few people are generally knocked out each round, it's highly unusual to see a single question expel such a large portion of players.

As the time limit ran down and the answer was revealed - shocked host Lee Mack said: "Wow. That is massive. 32 people went out on that one!"

Wales Online reports that the puzzle in question was: "Which of these would it be impossible to do? (A) Marry your cousin's cousin (B) Marry your brother's widow (C) Marry your widow's sister."

Lee went on to explain that the correct answer is C as "you would not be able to marry your widow's sister as you would already be dead", joking: "Before we get any complaints - I accept that is a bit zombie-ist."

Going on to ask how people were tripped up, contestant Jamil said: "I put B," with Lee responding: "Yes, your brother's widow - she's still alive but your brother has died. This isn't me breaking any news, I'm just telling you the answer to the question!"

Fellow contestant Kate, meanwhile, added: "I still thought I was right for a really long time, even after you told us the right answer," with Lee quipping: "You sound just like my wife!"

And over on social media, viewers were quick to share their frustrations that so many people were knocked out by the question. One asked: "How did 32 people get that wrong! #The1PercentClub," while another added: "Flipping heck 32 out!"

A third went on: "A total massacre in that question," while a fourth wrote: "32 out on that question. Must be a record. #The1PercentClub."
