Leeds dad fined after bizarre hotel and Wetherspoons rant

A Leeds dad hurled racist abuse at customers in a Wetherspoons before going on a bizarre rant in a city centre hotel.

Ian Owen, 38, has been fined £500 for breaching a restraining order designed to protect his ex-partner, who he was with on the night of the incidents on April 20 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard on Friday the order was put in last year after Owen, of Cross Green Lane, was acquitted of causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm. It was said the pair had been in an on-off relationship for seven years and shared a child.

Prosecutor Jordan Millican said Owen was prohibited from contacting his ex-partner but in April this year she agreed to meet him after he finished work. He said: "They began in Wetherspoons in the train station at around 6pm but he became agitated and argumentative with members of the public, asking what they were looking at, making racial remarks to others.

"They moved onto the Viaduct bar and left to go back to a hotel at around 11.30pm. They were sat in bed and without warning he became aggressive, saying she didn't love him and shouting, 'f*** you b****.' He ran off and ran out of the hotel shouting, 'I'll f*** you all.'"

The court heard Owen was arrested at his home the following day and told officers he had been with his sister the night before. He went on to plead guilty to breaching a restraining order. Mr Millican said Owen had 12 previous offences on his record including causing or assisting the ill-treatment or neglect causing unnecessary suffering to a child and being drunk and disorderly.

Mitigating, Thomas Doyle said Owen works in the mechanical trade and has been offered a new job and is due to start on Monday. He said the woman had invited Owen to see her on the day of the hotel incident. His Honour Judge Pema fined Owen £500 and told him he must be on an alcohol and abstinence tag for 130 days and carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.
