Talks between Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur on separate deals involving Archie Gray and Joe Rodon moving in opposite directions are progressing. If the transfers continue on their current track, the Whites are expected to receive £40m from the Premier League outfit for their teenage starlet.

Meanwhile, United are hopeful they will seal a deal that sends £10m to the capital for Rodon on a permanent switch after a hugely successful year on loan. Ipswich Town and Leicester City had also shown interest in the Wales international, but Daniel Farke looks set for a reunion with the centre-back as it stands.

The weekend had begun with Brentford bidding for Gray. A deal had been agreed in principle around £40m that gave the Bees permission to put Gray through a medical on Saturday.

However, a payment structure remained unresolved and ultimately Thomas Frank’s side were unable to meet United’s demands. Leeds pulled the plug on that deal and rejected the bid on Sunday morning, paving the way for Spurs to make their play.

Daniel Levy is understood to have agreed to United’s payment terms and should pocket the Whites a guaranteed £40m, although the breakdown of instalments is unclear. It is understood Brentford and Spurs had each activated that clause, though only the latter met United’s demands on structure.

There is no suggestion Gray was pushing to leave the Whites this summer. The clause was met, Leeds agreed payment terms and it came down to contract talks between Gray’s representatives and Tottenham.

Rodon was a key target for Farke this summer after making such a positive impact last season. He hit the ground running on loan and formed strong partnerships with both Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu.

Beating off Premier League competition for the 26-year-old’s signature will please the manager and strengthen their backline for the coming season, once the deal is done.
