If going abroad is out of your budget during the school summer holidays this year or you’d rather stay in the UK, then Leicestershire is an affordable alternative. The county has been named as the most affordable place for a family ‘staycation’ this summer in a survey.

An at average price of £80 per weekend night, Leicestershire ranked as the cheapest place for a family holiday. With Bradgate Park, Twycross Zoo, Twinlakes and National Space Centre there’s plenty for the kids to get stuck into in our county.

According to Outdoor Toys, Leicestershire has 390 ‘family’ hotels and 1,073 family-friendly dining options. Bradgate Park is synonymous with Leicestershire and is a beautiful place to go for a summer walk or a picnic with the family.

Peter, a 31-year-old male chimpanzee, explores the surrounding of his new home at Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, near Stirling. Peter has been transferred from Twycross Zoe, where he was born, and since his arrival at the end of February his keepers have been carefully acclimating him to his new environment. Keepers delayed the announcement of Peter's arrival so they could introduce him to Blair Drummond's existing male, Chippie, and the pair were finally introduced on April 4. There’s no entry fee for the park but you do have to pay for parking. For a full day, this will set you back £4.50 at their Newtown Linford, Hallgates and Hunts Hill car parks.

If you park at Swithland Wood, a full day of parking will set you back £2. Another day-out choice in Leicestershire is Twycross Zoo.

Twycross is the only UK zoo which is home to all four great apes, gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans. It has also recently reopened its Gruffalo Discovery Land.

At Twycross Zoo infants, those under three years old, go free, while adult tickets cost £24.95 and children’s tickets cost £17.95. Twinlakes near Melton is another option for families.

Known for its extensive indoor play areas and family-friendly roller coasters, its waterpark is also open throughout the summer. Tickets for a child begin at £11.95, while those under 95cm go free.

In Leicester itself, the National Space Centre is a must-see for those intrigued by the Milky Way. The space centre, which is clad in high-tech ETFE “pillows”, houses the Blue Streak and Thor Able rockets, as well as the Gagarin Experience, Apollo Lunar Lander and real Moon Rock.

Staffordshire and Kent ranked second and third as the most affordable places in the UK for a 'staycation'.
